In a Nutshell
As a part of the MA in Service Design, we were challenged to discuss the Future of Government. As a result, I helped to create a speculative design of a direct democracy platform where Citizens, Businesses, Civil Society Organisations and Councillors work together to create and improve public services in the future.

The Challenge
What will the government be like in 2030? This was the provocation that challenged me and my work group for two months to study, test ideas and more importantly, develop a speculative design project of a Government Platform in the future.

This project was a part of The Future of Government 2030+: A Citizen Centric Perspective, in collaboration with five other countries and design higher education institutions. We also had the help of Camden's Council Officers, who shared their vision of the borough’s future with us.

My Approach
My role was to collaborate with my team to create a vision of public services in the future. Our approach was to learn by designing and testing solutions and my main contribution was to synthesise the learnings from each test and transform them into a solid concept for a future platform.

1. Immersion: Understanding the Present
To envisage the future, we first examined the present landscape. By scrutinizing current government models and innovations, particularly in the realm of digital democracy, we sought insights into potential future scenarios and trends.

2. Experimentation: Shaping the Future
Building on our understanding of present challenges and future possibilities, we crafted our Future Democracy platform. Drawing inspiration from the European Commission's research, Camden Council's challenges, and existing digital democracy solutions, we embarked on the journey of envisioning and prototyping our future-oriented platform.

The Impact
Our provocation of a future democracy contributed to the studies of the European Commission and was displayed in an exhibition in Brussels. Also, Camden Council is using our idea to help plan digital services in the future and discuss how to optimise public investments.
You can check the detailed process and five key international design trends related to the future of Government suggested by me in this blog post.
